Actress Anne Heche died Friday a week after she crashed her car into a residence in an incident that left her in a coma and on life support.
TMZ reports that the 53-year-old actress and star of Donnie Brasco and the remake of Psycho crashed her car into a private home on August 5 and was communicating with firefighters as she was being rescued. Video later recovered by TMZ showed the actress speeding "like a maniac" and "flying down a street in her blue Mini Cooper."
The site reports that the actress first crashed into a garage at an apartment complex. When good samaritans tried to rescue her she put her car in reverse and sped away, only to slam into a nearby home causing the fireball that lit her and her car on fire.
Photos show "a bottle with a red cap in the cupholder next to the gearshift," that "looks like a bottle of alcohol" according to TMZ.
Los Angeles Firefighter Brian Humphrey said, "Fifty-nine firefighters took 65 minutes to access, confine and fully extinguish the stubborn flames within the heavily damaged structure."
According to Deadline the alcohol in her system was negligible but "Based on the blood work, it revealed the presence of narcotics," according to Officer Lizeth Lomeli of the LAPD.
RadarOnline reports that after the police gained a warrant to test Heche's blood, cocaine was the specific narcotic in her system on the day of the crash.
At the time of the crash local news reported that, "Actress Anne Heche is being investigated for felony driving under the influence after she crashed her car into a Los Angeles home, authorities said."
LAPD Officer Jeff Lee said Heche was originally charged with a misdemeanor impairment but the results from her blood test escalated the charge to a felony. A woman inside the home Heche hit had minor injuries but did not need medical attention.
Days before the incident Heche appeared on a removed episode of the podcast Better Together where she appeared with host Heather Duffy. Heche told the host she had been drinking and driving while downing vodka "wine chasers" after having a bad day.
According to Yahoo news a representative for Heche's family said that she had a severe anoxic brain injury, which is catastrophic. Knowing she could not survive the representative said, "It has long been her choice to donate her organs and she's being kept on life support to determine if any are viable."
