“The other thing that I feel about this is that it contains a whiff of the old eugenics thing where, you know, poor people shouldn’t have babies,” said Throness at the all candidates debate. “And so we can’t force them to have contraception, so we’ll give it to them for free. And maybe they’ll have fewer babies. So there will be fewer poor people in the future.”
Throness' comments were in relation to a BC NDP plan to make birth control free.
Throness is a social conservative who has previously caused controversy within BC provincial politics. Earlier this year, the BC Liberals were kicked out of the Vancouver Pride Parade because Throness advertised in a Christian magazine, which contained a pro-conversion therapy article. NDP MLA Spencer Chandra Herbert was the one who called out the BC Liberals on the issue and demanded Throness be kicked out of the party.
Throness survived the conversion therapy controversy but this current issue is seemingly the nail in the coffin for the MLA, who also served as the Official Opposition Critic for Children and Family Development.
338 Canada lists Chilliwack-Kent as a leaning BC Liberal seat, but now that Throness has resigned, the seat is expected to flip to the BC NDP.
