“Chair Girl” was set to learn whether she would have to serve jail time for throwing a chair into a crowded highway today. She threw the chair onto a busy highway in Toronto last year on Feb 9, 2019.
The reason for the delay? Ontario Court Justice Mara Greene is apparently under the weather, and with medical and sanitation tensions high globally, reporters were told the decision would have to wait until March 30.
This is the second time the sentencing has been delayed.
Last month, Marcella Zola said she was “very sorry for her actions” in front of Justice Mara Greene over a three hour period of sentencing submissions according to CTV News.
In a statement, Zoia said, “I am very sorry for my actions… I take this as a lesson.”
On Nov. 15 2019, Zoia pleaded guilty to mischief endangering life. Her charge was in connection with an incident in February of 2019. The incident was caught on video and shared online many times.
In the video Zoia can be seen throwing a chair off of a balcony while on the 45th floor of a condo building above Lake Shore Boulevard and Gardiner Expressway. There were no injuries reported after the incident occurred.
Footage of the incident was reviewed in a hearing on Feb. 7. In the video it is not clear where the chair landed.
The Crown is remorseful for Zoia’s wrongdoings and is looking for a sentence that will include four to six months in jail along with two years of probation. She was also asked to attend counselling for her alcohol consumption, which would consist of 240 community service hours.
The Crown is also seeking a ban on Zoia’s social media while she is on probation.
In a hearing, Zoia’s lawyer noted that she “never intended to get any social media attention.”
Defence lawyer, Leslie Keating is looking for a suspended sentence that includes “various conditions.” He also said that Zoia was “drinking excessively” which started for Zoia while she was still in high school. He argued that her drinking was relevant to the case because she was drinking on the night before the incident.
Leslie also said that Zoia is “not going to benefit in any way from going to jail.”
“She is doing everything she can to be a positive influence,” he added. “There is nothing to suggest that she will commit any other offences.”
Since Feb 2019, Zoia has been out on bail. Her conditions include that she live with her mother and refrain from contacting the four people involved in the incident. The conditions also include staying away from Maple Leaf Square Gardens—where the incident occurred.
Zoia’s sentencing is occurring in Old city Hall
