Donors consider walking away from Lincoln Project after mishandling of allegations against founder
Several wealthy donors are said to be considering dropping their support entirely, due to the investigation into the alleged harassment of several men by John Weaver.
The Lincoln Project is at risk of losing financial backing, according to CNBC. The Anti-Trump group was prominent in campaigning against the Republican President, but has since been embroiled in a scandal involving sexual misconduct of one of their founders, John Weaver.
Several wealthy donors are said to be considering dropping their support entirely, due to the investigation into the alleged harassment of several young men by John Weaver. These backers declined to be named, but contribute a decisive amount of money to the group. The group had allegedly raised $87 million and was looking to even start a new media business. All of that has now come to a halt.
The group is comprised of late Sen. John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign boss Steve Schmidt, as well as Author Rick Wilson and lawyer George Conway. They deny any awareness of the allegations of misconduct against Weaver until recently.
Weaver told The New York Times that he was a closeted gay man and that he is “truly sorry to these men and everyone and for letting so many people down.” The Lincoln Project has said it is “retaining a best-in-class outside professional to review Mr. Weaver’s tenure with the organization and to establish both accountability and best practices going forward for The Lincoln Project.”
As Weaver continues to be under FBI investigation, CNBC reports multiple donors have already dropped out of the organization, while others remain to witness the outcome of the investigation.
