BREAKING: Francis Scott Key Bridge collapses after cargo ship collision, search and rescue underway

The fire department said that there were "multiple" vehicles on the bridge at the time of the collapse, and that there are "multiple" people in the water. Baltimore Fire Chief James Wallace said there was a large tractor trailer sized vehicle that fell into the water when the collapse occurred. Two people were rescued, one in critical condition. There may be up to 20 people in the water. Dive teams have been searching the area.

The fire department said they were looking for "upwards of 7 individuals," but that they do not know for sure. Search and rescue teams have been looking for people in the water, both underneath and on the surface, as well as on the ship.

When asked how many vehicles plunged into the water during the collapse, Wallace said "Don't have a number. Our sonar has detected the precense of vehicles submgered in the water," but that they don't have "a count of that yet." Workers may also have been on the bridge.

Mayor Brandon Scott said the collapse looked like "something out of an action movie," and that the tragedy was "like something you could never imagine." He urged press to focus on those who are "impacted."

"There were likley multiple people on the bridge at the time, and as a result, multiple people in the water," said Wallace. The crew on the ship that hit the bridge, he said, was "still on board." The ship's crew has been in contact with the Coast Guard.

Video of the ship heading under the bridge shows a loss of power prior to the collision, with power aboard being regained too late to avoid the bridge supports.

“This is a dire emergency,” Baltimore City Fire spokesman Kevin Cartwright told the AP. “Our focus right now is trying to rescue and recover these people.”

Maryland Governor Wes Moore made a statement regarding the situation, saying, "My office is in close communication with U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott, Baltimore County Executive Johnny Olszewski, and the Baltimore Fire Department as emergency personnel are on the scene following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge."

"I have declared a State of Emergency here in Maryland and we are working with an interagency team to quickly deploy federal resources from the Biden Administration," he added.

The container ship, called the "Dali," sails under the flag of Singapore. It was heading to Sri Lanka and is owned by Grace Ocean Pte Ltd, and managed by Synergy Marine Group. "Whilst the exact cause of the incident is yet to be determined, the Dali has now mobilised its qualified individual incident response service," Synergy Marine Group said.

There were reportedly no injuries among the crew. Aftermath of the crash shows the bridge in pieces.
