Vice President-elect JD Vance traveled to North Carolina on Friday to survey the damage left after Hurricane Helene devastated the state in late October. Vance visited with volunteer firefighters in Fairview, North Carolina, a town outside of Asheville in Western North Carolina. That portion of the state saw devastating floods destroy homes, roads, and other infrastructure.
A source familiar with the trip told NBC News that the Vice President-elect will also visit a home renovation project, and visit with the family of Tony Ray Garrison, a fire battalion chief who died while rescuing victims of a mudslide from the hurricane.

Some people in the areas hit by the storm are living in tents or hotels as they await word on whether they can get temporary housing as cold weather sets in.
The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services said that as of December 4, there have been 103 Helene-related deaths. Buncombe county, which includes both Asheville and Fairview, was hit the hardest, with 43 deaths being recorded.
Joe Biden has been hit with backlash as he announced earlier in the week over $1 billion in new humanitarian support for "Africans displaced from homes by historic droughts or food insecurity," while Americans whose lives were upended by the storm live in tents.
