National modeling in the wake of new COVID variants making their way across Canada indicates that the current health measures, from lockdowns to face masks, will not be enough to prevent a new wave of viral spread.
The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) issued the projections on Friday, showing that while the virus had been becoming more manageable, the new variants make that control a dicier proposition, according to CTV News.
The modelling cited by PHAC focuses primarily on three variants, the B.1.1.7 from the UK, South Africa's B.1.351 variant, and the P.1 variant from Brazil.
Daily case counts across Canada are in decline and the infection spikes are also down. The projection from PHAC is that 878,850 cases will be recorded by Feb. 28, with deaths totalling under 22,500 by that date.

Removing the variable of the variants, the PHAC said that Canadians are doing a good job of controlling the spread through limiting their contacts, but these precautions will not be enough to contain the new strains of the virus.
