BREAKING: NY Governor Cuomo threatens to ‘displace’ Mayor de Blasio and bring in the National Guard
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has said that given the failure of Mayor Bill de Blasio to get control of New York City last night, he may take action to remove the mayor from his post.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has said that given the failure of Mayor Bill de Blasio to get control of New York City last night, he may take action to remove the mayor from his post.
New York City is no stranger to peaceful protest, and as a peaceful city with a large population, protests happen with relative frequency. However, the protests that began several days ago have given way to riots and criminal activity.
Cuomo said "I believe the Mayor underestimates the scope of the problem. I think he underestimates the duration of the problem. And I don't think they've used enough police to address the situation, because it's inarguable that it was not addressed last night... What happened in New York City was inexcusable."
Last night, the Big Apple saw looting, shooting, and massive civil unrest in the wake of George Floyd's murder at the hands of Minneapolis police officers on May 25.
In response, Cuomo said "My option is to displace the Mayor of New York City and bring in the National Guard as the Governor in a state of emergency and basically take over, you would have to take over, the Mayor's job. You would have to displace the Mayor."
He went on to say that "A) I don't think we're at that point, B) that would be such a chaotic situation in the midst of an already chaotic situation, I don't think that makes any sense."
De Blasio has come under fire for his treatment of New Yorkers during the coronavirus crisis, during which playgrounds have been closed and police have been used to enforce social distancing guidelines at Jewish funerals. But he has not used those same tactics to break up what Cuomo called "the criminal activity" in New York last night.
De Blasio and Cuomo have been at odds for much of the pandemic, with an inability to come to consensus over many issues, including the closure of schools, and the use of hospitals and medical resources.
This is a breaking story and will be updated.
