Providence police are now investigating a potential link between the shooting at Brown University on Saturday, that stole the lives of two students, and a Boston shooting on Monday in which an MIT professor was shot to death in his home.
WPRI reports from Providence that senior law enforcement officials "are now examining possible ties between the two crimes. Multiple people familiar with the investigation said they have discovered evidence showing the two may be linked."
On Tuesday, at the nightly press conference given by Providence officials, Boston FBI special agent Ted Docks said that there "seems to be no connection" between the two incidents.
A gunman walked into an engineering building on Brown University's campus on Saturday and opened fire in a lecture hall where an economics study group was taking place ahead of finals. Ella Cook and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov were killed.
On Monday, MIT professor Nuno Loureiro was shot to death inside his Brookline, MA home and died after being taken to a local hospital. Loureiro was the head of the Plasma Science and Fusion Center at MIT. He'd been awarded the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, along with 400 others, by Joe Biden.
Providence police have been looking for a person of interest in connection with the shooting but do not appear to have had any solid leads five days out from the killings.
