JUST IN: President Biden declines Super Bowl interview with CBS

According to Deadline, this is the second year in a row that the Biden administration has declined traditional Super Bowl interviews. The White House did not give a reason for the surprising move.

White House Spokesperson Ben LaBolt told Variety, "We hope viewers enjoy watching what they tuned in for - the game."

In years past the presidential interview has drawn tens of millions of viewers and has become an annual tradition since former President Barack Obama started doing it in 2009.

Biden's declining the interview last year with Fox News hosting the big game was seen as understandable due to the outlet's apparent right-leaning bias. Days after launching airstrikes in Iraq and Syria, and with the 2024 election in full swing, the decision to decline an opportunity to speak to a large section of the American population is an "intriguing one" the outlet noted.

Former President Donald Trump, skipped out on the pregame interview in 2018 with NBC News, during a time when he had criticized players for kneeling for the national anthem.

Savannah Guthrie told the outlet that her interview with then-President Obama in 2015 was "really tricky." She noted, "You have to remember, this is an interview that takes place in the Super Bowl pre-show. The last thing everyone is thinking about or wanting to talk about is politics.”
