BREAKING: Trudeau wage subsidy bill FINALLY passes in House of Commons

Bill C-14 will bring wage subsidy to Canadians following some contention from the Conservatives, who took some issue with the $73 billion wage subsidy. Normal parliamentary procedure was taken to ensure the bill was passed in a single day.

Opposition Leader Andrew Scheer said that the bill would have Conservative support on the condition that there were more accountability measures put in place, the CBC reports.

"The prime minister said we need to prepare for a second and perhaps a third wave. Canadians want to know how this government is preparing to get ahead of those waves."

"Parliament has a vital role to play now. Through debate and discussion and regular questions from the opposition, we will get better results for Canadians," Scheer said in a speech to the Commons," Scheer continued.

Trudeau addressed a minimized House of Commons, addressing the pandemic as a war-time situation with the fight for peoples lives on our own shores, and inside of homes and hospitals. "Without reservation, without pause, we must fight for every inch of ground against this disease. We must be there for one another as we spare no effort to safeguard our collective future," Trudeau said.

The bill will put in action the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy, which will aid companies in avoiding layoffs, and to ensure that up to 75% of people's wages continue to be paid to them. Companies must meet certain criteria, such as having a 30 percent loss in revenue compared to last year's figures.

The bill was given Conservative support once the Liberals accepted some of the official opposition's changes.

Finance Minister Bill Morneau says businesses should expect to receive their funding within 2 to 5 weeks. The bill will now move to the senate for its approval.
