BREAKING: Virginia AG demands Dem donor group ActBlue answer for fraud allegations
“For the foregoing reasons, it is imperative that you provide my office with a detailed description of ActBlue’s processes and procedures for verifying the legitimacy and accuracy of donor and contribution information.”
Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares is demanding answers about allegations of fraudulent donations from ActBlue, a donation platform for Democratic politicians.
In a letter sent to ActBlue, Miyares said, "My office has become aware of multiple serious allegations that ActBlue, ActBlue Civics, Inc., and ActBlue Charities, Inc. (together "ActBlue") have engaged in fraudulent, deceptive, and/or otherwise illegal activities in the Commonwealth of Virginia and/or have aided and abetted others in doing so."
"This includes hundreds of thousands of dollars of contributions through individual donors in the Commonwealth in volumes that are facially implausible and appear suspicious. Some of these Virginia donors are reported as making multiple daily contributions over the course of multiple years amounting to tens of thousands of dollars in aggregate," he added.
In conclusion, he wrote, "For the foregoing reasons, it is imperative that you provide my office with a detailed description of ActBlue's processes and procedures for verifying the legitimacy and accuracy of donor and contribution information as well as the processes and procedures used in verifying information reported to regulatory bodies. Given the seriousness of these allegations, I expect to receive your substantive response by August 12, 2024."
The allegations of fraud come after the Democrat donation platform has come under scrutiny after reports showed that some donors living in small apartments were making thousands of donations each year totaling tens of thousands of dollars.
Earlier this week, when the issue was brought to the attention of Miyares' office, he wrote, "My office is aware of these allegations and rest assured, we are looking into it." The donation platform claims to be home of "small-dollar donors" for supporters of Democrats. ActBlue "is available to Democratic candidates and committees, progressive organizations, and nonprofits that share our values for no cost besides a 3.95 percent processing fee on donations," per the group's website.
