CBC gives $10,000 ‘Toronto book award’ to author—he’s arrested at ‘defund the police’ occupation the next day

The author, whose name is Desmond Cole, received the money after he wrote The Skin We’re In. The state broadcaster said this book details "Cole's personal journalism, activism and experiences alongside stories that made the headlines across the country."

The CBC argued that this author deserved this money as it best evoked the spirit of Toronto (whatever that means). As a result of this, Cole will receive $10,000 in taxpayer money from an institution that has been hemorrhaging cash over the past few years.

The ever-charitable Cole has pledged to donate a quarter of his reward to a mutual aid fund for black, trans women. He is doing this, he explained, in reaction to the Toronto Public Library’s decision to platform the writer Meghan Murphy in 2019.

"In honour of the fact that's who is giving me this award tonight, I wanted to use this opportunity to give back and say we all have to do a lot better,” Cole said sanctimoniously.

In a recent report, the CBC detailed that their revenue plummeted by 19 percent in 2020, yet they still managed to discover funds to award this author. It is worth noting that the CBC still found ways to lose this revenue, in spite of the fact that they received a hefty $1.3 billion from the Canadian taxpayer.

Despite the CBC’s inability to manage their finances, they evidently believe that rewarding a political activist stands in line with their mandate to remain non-partisan.

Cole was then arrested for trespassing during a "defund the police" event. After the event concluded, the city issued a statement, saying the mayor had offered to meet with Cole and his fellow activists. The demonstrators naturally rejected this offer.

The call to defund the police has been a controversial position to take across the North American continent. President Barack Obama, for instance, has criticized this rallying cry, saying that the BLM movement lost "a big audience the moment [they] said it."

On top of this, cities who actually legislated policy which defunded the police have, remarkably, seen an increase in crime. In New York City, for instance, shootings spiked by 127 percent.
