Chicago mayor comes around to Trump’s deployment of federal agents

Lightfoot has been forced to walk back her negative statements about the federal government's effort to ensure the safety of citizens in Chicago and across the country. Chicago has been the site of masses of shootings, including the shooting of 15 people who gathered for a funeral over the weekend.

The New York Post reported that Lightfoot's office confirmed that Trump had "reached out... to confirm that he plans to send federal resources to Chicago to supplement ongoing federal investigations pertaining to violent crime."

A statement from The Chicago Sun-Times said "the conversation was brief and straightforward."

"Mayor Lightfoot maintains that all resources will be investigatory in nature and be coordinated through the US Attorney’s office," the statement continued.

"The Mayor has made clear that if there is any deviation from what has been announced, we will pursue all available legal options to protect Chicagoans."

The effort on the part of the federal government to send officers to cities across the country is part of the Operation Legend anti-violence initiative—named after LeGend Taliferro, who was shot and killed in Kansas City in June. Federal officers have also been deployed to Albuquerque, New Mexico and to Kansas City, Missouri as part of this initiative.

The New York Post said that the federal agents would "collaborate with Chicago police and Lightfoot's office under the direction of US Attorney John Lausch."

"This is not patrol. This is not against civil unrest," Lausch said. "This is working with the Chicago Police Department to do what we can to reduce the staggering violent crime we’re facing right now."

Lausch added that the federal agents would focus on three things: "gangs, guns an drugs."

Though the agents will not don camouflage gear, they may wear "tactical gear" and "work undercover," the New York Post reported.
