Chuck Schumer does not ‘rule out’ Trump impeachment if Dems take back House in midterms

In an interview with CNN’s Dana Bash, Schumer accused Trump of continually "violating [the] rule of law." However, he stopped short of explicitly saying Democrats would pursue impeachment when asked about Georgia Senator Jon Ossoff’s recent comments. During a town hall on Friday, Ossoff argued that Trump’s actions had exceeded “any prior standard for impeachment."

Bash pressed Schumer, asking, “Do you agree with [Ossoff], would that be a priority if Democrats were to take back Congress?”

“Well look, right now, President Trump is violating the rule of the law in every way,” Schumer responded. “And we’re fighting him every single day in every way. And our goal is to show the American people, over and over again, whether it’s the economy, whether it’s tariffs, whether it’s Russia and overseas and whether it’s rule of law, how bad he is. Two years is too far away to predict, our job is day to day to day, to show who Trump is, what he is doing and it’s having an effect.”

When Bash asked if he was not ruling out impeachment, Schumer gave a vague response: "Look, it’s too far away to even judge."

Schumer’s comments followed Ossoff’s town hall, where an attendee demanded that Trump be impeached. Ossoff agreed, saying Democrats need a majority in the House of Representatives to pursue actions like impeachment.

Democrats have criticized Trump over a range of policies, particularly on immigration. The Trump administration has sought ways to expedite deportations, drawing fire from the left and a number of federal judges who have blocked such measures. Critics have been especially concerned about the administration’s efforts to use the Alien Enemies Act to deport suspected illegal immigrant gang members without trial, a move the administration has defended as necessary, but the Supreme Court has since put on hold.
