View on XDe Blasio's comments were in response to a shooting at Atlanta area spas that have been blamed on white supremacy by the media despite police reports that revealed that the suspect claimed his killing of eight women was motivated by sex addiction.
"We need to know everything we can to find those who did it and bring them to justice. Because I’m a believer that we of course need the bigger efforts, the education, the outreach, but we also need consequences," de Blasio said, according to the Washington Post.
In the case of non-criminal conduct, it is unclear what those "consequences" would be of such behavior, since, as stated above, the NYPD only has the authority to issue warnings in these cases. De Blasio did, however, follow up with:
"Even if something is not a criminal case, a perpetrator being confronted by the city, whether it's NYPD or another agency, and being told that what they've done was very hurtful to another person and could, if ever repeated, lead to criminal charges — that's another important piece of the puzzle. That's why we need these reports."
"One of the things officers are trained to do is to give warnings. If someone has done something wrong, but not rising to a criminal level, it's perfectly appropriate for an NYPD officer to talk to them to say, 'That was not appropriate, and if you did that on a higher level, that would be a crime.'"
"And I think that has an educating impact on people. I think it has a sobering impact that we need."
This comes in the wake of a shooting attack in Atlanta which left six Asian-American women dead and two others in area massage parlors. The suspect claimed that the race of the victims had nothing to do with the crime, and blamed his addiction to porn instead.
Other incidents with Asian victims have been occurring all across the country, with perpetrators of all different races and colors being detained.
