Washington State Patrol announced the arrest Thursday of a 49-year-old Seattle man for allegedly stealing Seattle Police Officer Alexandra 'Lexi' Harris' car, after the five-year veteran was hit and killed by another vehicle on the side of I-5.
WSP Captain Ron Mead announced in the press conference Thursday night at the District Headquarters that Roger Lee Owens Jr., 49, was arrested by the WSP and the SPD SWAT team at a hotel in the Eastgate area of Bellevue Thursday at at 9:22 PM for felony hit and run, theft of a stolen vehicle, and possession of a stolen firearm. Owens reportedly had a previous criminal history. It is unclear if the firearm was the weapon reportedly stolen from Harris.
Mead also announced that six additional people were arrested, some for assisting Owens as he evaded police.
SPD West Precinct officer Alexandra Harris, 38, was on her way home from duty early Sunday morning when she happened upon a three-car collision blocking the HOV lanes in the south bound lanes on I-5 near the Spokane St. on-ramp in Seattle. Out of the goodness of her heart, she selflessly exited her vehicle to check on the welfare of the civilians involved in the collision. A driver passing by tragically struck Harris and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
WSP said Owens was involved in the three-car collision on I-5 which Officer Harris had pulled over to assist with on her way home from her duty shift Sunday. He allegedly got out of his car following the collision and fled in Harris' car. The car was recovered Sunday in Georgetown.
The individual that struck Harris remained on scene and has been fully cooperating with the investigation, according to detectives with Washington State Patrol. The investigation by Washington State Patrol remains ongoing.
This is a developing story.
