Jack Dorsey says some Twitter employees can work from home forever

Jack Dorsey, the CEO of Twitter, emailed his employees on Tuesday, letting them know that they would be able to work from home permanently, even after the coronavirus pandemic blows over. The caveat was that those who have jobs which require physical presence would still be required to come in.

“We've been very thoughtful in how we've approached this from the time we were one of the first companies to move to a work-from-home model,” according to a Twitter spokesperson. “We'll continue to be, and we'll continue to put the safety of our people and communities first.”

Twitter encouraged its employees to begin working from home in early March, as the coronavirus began to spread across the US. Other tech companies decided to take the same route, such as Microsoft, Google, and Amazon.

Jennifer Christie, Twitter's human resources head, said the company would "never probably be the same" as far as the structure of its work. “People who were reticent to work remotely will find that they really thrive that way,” Christie said. “Managers who didn’t think they could manage teams that were remote will have a different perspective. I do think we won’t go back.”

Dorsey had already been toying with the idea of shaking up the way the company operated before the outbreak, but the pandemic forced the social media giant to expedite its timeline.

Dorsey mentioned in his email that it would be unlikely for Twitter to open its offices before September, and that business travel would be postponed until then as well, with very few exceptions.

The company will also suspend all in-person events for the remainder of the year, and reassess its plan for 2021 to sometime this year. Twitter also increased its allowances for work from home supplies to $1,000 for all employees.
