Elon Musk’s SpaceX under investigation for hiring discrimination
The DOJ’s Immigrant and Employee Rights Section received a complaint from a non-US citizen, who alleged that SpaceX discriminated against them due to their citizenship status, according to court documents.
The US Department of Justice is reportedly investigating Elon Musk-owned SpaceX, due to alleged discrimination in its hiring practices against non-US citizens, CNBC reports.
The DOJ’s Immigrant and Employee Rights Section received a complaint from a non-US citizen, who alleged that SpaceX discriminated against them due to their citizenship status, according to court documents.
"The charge alleges that on or about March 10, 2020, during the Charging Party’s interview for the position of Technology Strategy Associate, SpaceX made inquiries about his citizenship status and ultimately failed to hire him for the position because he is not a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident," DOJ attorney Lisa Sandoval said in a filing Thursday.
The Immigrant and Employee Rights Section reportedly notified SpaceX in June that it had opened an investigation and requested hiring documents and other information on the company's employee hiring practices.
SpaceX reportedly refused "to produce any Form I-9 supporting documentation, such as copies of employees’ passports, driver’s licenses, or Social Security cards," the filing states. SpaceX filed a petition to dismiss the subpoena, arguing that it exceeded the scope of IER’s authority. The IER countered, and said the subpoenaed documents are required to show how many non-citizens were hired by SpaceX.
The DOJ has reportedly requested an order from the court to force the company to hand over the subpoenaed documents within two weeks.
