‘Industrial powerhouse’: Ford announces $50 million to repurpose factories for medical supplies

As well as this, Ford has launched a $50 million fund so that businesses can alter their production lines so they can increase the supply of this much-needed equipment.

In order to highlight his mission, Ford cited the Guelph-based company Linamar who previously constructed auto parts. Now, they are racing to produce ventilators for the province's hospitals.

Ontario has ordered 10,000 of these ventilators and Ford hopes that these will be delivered to hospitals within weeks.

Ontario is an "industrial powerhouse," added the premier. Ford wants the province to use its businesses to help the entire country fight coronavirus.

So far, Canada seems to be unprepared for the next few weeks of the coronavirus pandemic. As more people contract the disease, ventilators and masks will become increasingly crucial to Canada's healthcare system.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was asked why the national emergency stockpile wasn't sufficient for the current pandemic, Trudeau said he "recognized the challenges" that front-line healthcare workers were facing.

"Countries around the world are trying to get more of these supplies, we are expecting to see more shipments coming in very shortly that will help in Canada... And we are also working on tooling up our own production... We are doing everything we can to meet the very real and pressing needs we have across this country... We need our healthcare systems and workers to have the protection they need as they keep the rest of us safe."

On Sunday evening, The Post Millennial discovered that Ford personally drove his truck to a warehouse in Markham, Ontario so to deliver some 90,000 surgical masks to Ontario's healthcare warehouse in Toronto.
