WATCH: Democrat politician falsely accuses Gina Carano of being a ‘Nazi’
On “Real Time with Bill Maher” earlier this month, former North Dakota Senator Heidi Heitkamp called actor Gina Carano a “Nazi,” a comment that had Heitkamp acknowledging the possibility of a defamation suit to follow.
On "Real Time with Bill Maher" earlier this month, former Democratic North Dakota Senator Heidi Heitkamp called actor Gina Carano a "Nazi," a comment that had Heitkamp acknowledging the possibility of a defamation suit to follow.
In the conversation between Heitkamp and Maher, Maher asks what Carano did, to which Heitkamp responds quickly, "She’s a Nazi," before backtracking.
"What was the woman in "The Mandalorian?" What did she do? Did she like something or-?" asked Maher.
"She’s a Nazi," states Heitkamp. "Oh that’s different, right, I’m thinking of somebody [else]. Well, she’s not a Nazi," Maher responds.
"She’s a white - she’s involved with white supremacy," Heitkamp says, backtracking on the severity of her earlier comment. Heitkamp continues by saying Carano "hangs with white supremacists" and then goes on to acknowledge that she may be subject to a defamation suit due to her preceding comments.
In a tweet posted by Carano Sunday, she called the conversation the "dehumanization phase of cancel culture."
"Here we have more of the dehumanizing phase of cancel culture. Repeat lies over and over until the population takes them as "truth." False, disturbing & disgusting language coming from a former US Senator. @HeidiHeitkamp You knew as soon as you said it you were liable."
Carano, though no stranger to controversy in the past, was in the spotlight earlier this year after being fired from “The Mandalorian” for a social media post comparing the current political climate to that of Nazi Germany.
"Jews were beaten in the streets, not by Nazi soldiers but by their neighbors … even by children. Because history is edited, most people today don’t realize that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbors hate them simply for being Jews. How is that any different from hating someone for their political views," The now deleted Instagram story post reads.
Lucasfilm, which produces "The Mandalorian," called Carano’s post unacceptable in a statement shortly after her firing.
"Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future," Lucasfilm said in the statement. "Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable."
