Former Quebec judge convicted of murder released, new trial set due to new evidence
Jaques Delisle has been freed by the Quebec Superior Court at 85 years of age, after new evidence has surfaced that could exonerate him of his previous murder conviction.
Jacques Delisle has been freed by the Quebec Superior Court at 85 years of age, after new evidence has surfaced that could exonerate him of his previous murder conviction.
Delisle was found guilty of first-degree murder in 2012 in the shooting death of his then wife, Marie Nicole Rainville. He had previously filed an appeal in 2013, which was rejected at the time.
According to Global News, the new evidence that has come to light is likely to prove Delisle to be innocent, and that Rainville in fact killed herself.
Justice Minister David Lametti has purportedly reviewed the new evidence, which is what prompted him to order a new trial for Delisle. Lametti commented that it was probable that a miscarriage of justice occurred the first time around.
In the meantime, Delisle will be able to enjoy freedom while the new trial is schedule and takes place.
