Fundraiser launched for Missouri teen ‘Kaylee’ who remains in critical condition with brain injuries after brutal assault outside high school
The 15-year-old, identified only as Kaylee, has been in hospital since she suffered a skull fracture, brain bleeding, and damage to her frontal lobe.
The female student from Hazelwood East High School north of St. Louis, Missouri who had her head repeatedly bashed into the concrete during a fight on Friday is "fighting hard to stay alive," according to her family.
The 15-year-old, identified only as Kaylee, has been in hospital since the incident suffering from a skull fracture, brain bleeding, and damage to her frontal lobe.
On Tuesday, a GoFundMe was launched on behalf of Kaylee and her family. It has since raised nearly $30,000.
The organizer, Sarah Hall, revealed that the teen "has major brain bleeding and swelling and is in critical condition."
"Kaylee is fighting hard to stay alive and heal but this is only the beginning of a very uphill battle for Kaylee and her family," Hall added. "We will not know the [extent] of the brain damage that has occurred until she wakes up but the path to recovery will be extremely hard on the family, not only mentally but financially."
She noted that the teen's mother and father are "staying by her side night and day hoping to bring her back to the Kaylee they know and love."
Following the beating, the alleged attacker was taken into custody. Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey said that the 15-year-old suspect showed a "complete disregard for human life," and said she should be tried as an adult.
In a statement, the school said it is a "tragedy anytime children are hurt," adding that, "bullying and fighting in the community is an issue for which we all need to take ownership and work towards a resolution for the sake of our children."
"The Hazelwood School District offers our sincerest condolences to everyone involved, and will offer additional emotional support from our support and crisis team to those in need."
