Group of homeless people go to court after being told to leave Toronto’s parks
The group is asking the city for an interim order that allows them to continue camping and living in the city’s parks until a constitutional challenge of the city bylaw is constructed.
A group of homeless people are heading to court today to challenge the cities attempts to remove them from parks, CP24 reports. Many of the people in the park encampments have fled shelters over the safety concerns surrounding the coronavirus.
The group is asking the city for an interim order that allows them to continue camping and living in the city's parks until a constitutional challenge of the city bylaw is constructed. The group is being supported by local activist organizations.
Toronto says the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms does not entitle them to live in the parks and that bylaw bans living and camping in parks after 12 am.
The city has taken steps to keep homeless people safe during this pandemic, including finding temporary or permanent homes for hundreds from the encampments and improving safety in shelters.
