On Monday night, the Montreal Canadiens completed a four-game sweep of the Winnipeg Jets, winning 3-2. The Canadiens will now be heading to the Stanley Cup semifinals, and Habs fans flooded the streets around the Bell Centre to celebrate.
Fans set off fireworks and smoke bombs in a small alley on des Canadiens-de-Montréal Ave. Video shows fireworks being set off in close proximity to fans celebrating.
Fans also played catch with parking cones and frisbees, and displayed brooms to signify the "sweep" their team had just accomplished.
Montreal police said Tuesday morning the ecstatic crowds in downtown Montreal were well behaved.
Police spokesperson Mario Couture said “a very small group” of individuals threw fireworks at a squad car and assaulted a police officer. Couture added that one arrest was made in connection with the incident, and others may follow.
According to the Montreal Gazette, cops in riot gear formed a line to block the way to the arena, and crowds were dispersed after a small group attempted to flip over a cop car.
"It feels amazing, we’re going all the way like ’93," Earl Ralph told the Montreal Gazette Monday night on his way out of the Bell Centre. "We were starving for a winning team and we got it out the blue here; so high, what a high."
"It’s like there’s 25,000 people in there, it’s amazing, you don’t need 25,000, you only need 2,500 and a great team," Ralph continued. "It’s a religion!"
Celebrations continued around the Bell Centre hours after the game had completed.
"It was a great atmosphere, a lot of noise,” said Tony Iadeluca told the Montreal Gazette. "Fans were all into it, overtime, we started cheering right away and they scored fast in overtime."
