LeBron James took to Twitter on Monday to admit that he took the wrong approach by posting a controversial tweet after the death of Ma’Khia Bryant. "I fueled the wrong conversation about Ma’Khia Bryant and I owe it to her and this movement to change it."
In the tweet, James also posted a link to an article entitled "Why They're Not Saying Ma'Khia Bryant's Name," written by Fabiola Cineas for Vox. "Thank you @fabiolacineas for educating us about Ma’Khia and her story and why this needs to be about her. #sayhername #Blacklivesmatter."
James also added in another tweet "Protect our Young Black Women & Men!"
After the fatal officer-involved shooting of Bryant after she attempted to stab another woman, James doxxed a photo of the Ohio police officer to his 50 million followers on Twitter and said, "You’re Next" then ended the tweet with "accountability." James was criticized across social media for the tweet before he deleted it.
The article from Vox, attempted to deflect blame from Bryant for the attempted murder and instead targeted Nicholas Reardon, the officer who appears to have saved the life of Bryant’s intended victim.
During an interview on Fox News, Detective Jamie McBride, a member of the board of directors for the Los Angeles Police Protective League, claimed James was “inciting violence…towards police officers.” The union asked NBA commissioner Adam Silver to launch an investigation to determine if James violated any league policies.
A deputy with the Marshal’s office in Bellevue, Idaho was suspended without pay after posting a parody video mocking the NBA superstar after it went viral.
The National Fraternal Order of Police posted on Twitter, "@KingJames, with his vast resources & influence, should educate himself and, frankly, has a responsibility to do so, on the facts before weighing in. This is disgraceful & extremely reckless. The officer saved a young girl's life. No amount of gaslighting will change that fact."
