Theft at Loblaws that was left open on Easter Sunday

Most shops, even those deemed essential, were closed for Easter Sunday however a Loblaws store located at 396 St. Clair Ave. was somehow left unintentionally unlocked.

David Marchione was shopping at the Loblaws for a while before he realized there were no staff present. He told CP24 that he saw someone coming out of the store with several grocery bags while on a walk through his neighbourhood.

He noticed an absence of security guards and no line up in front of the Loblaws, which is located in the Bathurst and St. Clair Avenue West area. Marchione thought since the store wasn't busy, all the more reason to pick up some groceries.

He entered the store which had on all of its interior lights on and music playing. Marchione noticed a person in the produce section, however there seemed to be no staff present. He went about his shopping and it wasn't until he went up to pay that he realized all of the cashier stands were closed, including the self-checkout kiosks.

It was then that Marchione realized the store wasn't actually open, he posted about it on Facebook Sunday, writing, "(I) decided to put all my stuff back as it was starting to feel like I was in Zombieland,"

"Turns out those people I saw with groceries literally shopped and left without paying like an episode of Supermarket Sweep. They straight jacked Loblaws."

Upon leaving the store, he talked to a couple who had called the police to let them know about the mix-up.

"We can confirm that we experienced an occurrence that the Loblaws at 396 St. Clair Avenue... while the store was closed for business on Easter Sunday," a spokesperson for Loblaws wrote in an email to CP24 on Sunday. "Unfortunately, closing protocols were not completed in entirety which resulted in a number of customers gaining access to our store."

Just how much merchandise was stolen while the during Easter Sunday is still unknown.
