Two Toronto police officers were treated for injuries in hospital on Tuesday after being slashed by a man wielding a broken bottle in Scarborough.
The suspect has been identified as Kadah Dematas, of Toronto and 22 years of ago. Dematas has now been charged with 12 separate offences, including two counts of the serious charges of assaulting a peace officer with a weapon and two further counts of assaulting a peace officer causing bodily harm.
Dematas had on his possession a semi-automatic firearm at the time of his apprehension and arrest, as well as a large quantity of illegal drugs. The other eight charges are apparently related to these items.
The officers in question, who will remain unidentified, were members of the Gun and Gang Task Force. At around 11:45 pm in the area of Lawrence Av. E and Scarborough Golf Club world, they were staking out a building and observed the suspect on his way in.
They tried to apprehend him, which is when he attacked them with the broken bottle. A struggle ensued, but the suspect was ultimately detained and placed under arrest.
The two officers are in good condition, and it appears that the injuries were not serious or life-threatening.
