Tuesday morning at approximately 7:30am, a young man was set on fire in the area of Campbell River. He was found with severe burns on his back, is being treated and authorities are investigating.
A 911 call was received by local authorities when some fishermen discovered the man while walking to the trails under the bridge that spans the Campbell River on their way to go fishing. They found him in the parking lot of The Brick nearby.
According to CHEK News, an ambulance arrived at the scene and rushed the 20-year-old man to the nearest hospital, where he is receiving treatment. His condition is described as stable but very serious.
So far, the investigation indicates that the man was sleeping under the bridge on the island, when someone approached him and deliberately lit his clothes on fire. The man ran to the parking lot to get help. That was when he was spotted by the fishermen.
The local RCMP released a statement: “Setting someone on fire is truly an egregious offence. Nobody, no matter what their situation in life deserves to be treated in such a horrendous manner. We at the Campbell River RCMP intend to use our resources to locate the individual/individuals responsible for this incident and hold them legally accountable. We truly wish this young man a speedy recovery.”
This is an ongoing investigation, and anyone who has any information is encouraged to call the Campbell River RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
