Mark Messier sues Edmonton man for allegedly shady business deal
Mark Messier, the former captain of the Edmonton Oilers, is suing a businessman in Edmonton for a cannabis company deal that went south and allegedly cost him more than half a million dollars.
Mark Messier, the former captain of the Edmonton Oilers, is suing a businessman in Edmonton for a cannabis company deal that went south and allegedly cost him more than half a million dollars.
Messier is suing Ed Moroz, who is the CEO of Destiny Bioscience, a cannabis company headquartered in the Edmonton area.
According to CTV News, the complaint, which was filed in New York State, alleges that Moroz misrepresented an investment in which Messier took part, where he bought 400 shares of the company in question.
The transaction was conducted in May of 2019, but the company later folded, deeply in debt, and Messier lost his investment.
According to the text of the complaint, "Moroz also repeatedly solicited Messier’s investment and represented that the investment was a sure thing -- Messier could not lose money on it."
The complaint goes on to say that Moroz had no intention of running the company to make a profit:
"Despite Moroz’s express assurances, Destiny was not a sure thing. It was a worthless company propped up by nothing more than Moroz’s grandiose promises," reads the lawsuit.
In addition, Messier claims that monies were due in January as per that which was stipulated in the contract between the two, which have not been paid.
CTV reached Moroz by phone, but he had no comment.
