CNN Analyst Jonathan Reiner appeared on the network with Ana Cabrera on Sunday to say that President Donald Trump's decision to hold an indoor rally in Nevada was 'negligent homicide," noting that much of those who were in attendance were not wearing face masks.
Cabrera kicked off the segment by drawing attention to the Tulsa rally Trump held in June, where Reiner referred to the decision as "criminal endangerment." At that time, there was reportedly 2.2 million coronavirus cases in the country and 119,000 deaths.
But now, in the middle of September, Cabrera asked Reiner what you call a president who is holding an indoor rally when over 6 million have contracted the virus and 193,000 have died as a result. Reiner gave a long, dramatic pause before suggesting that "negligent homicide" was the only viable term for the president's actions.
Reiner stated that if there are large gatherings of people who are in close proximity to each other, "people will get infected, and some of those people will die." Reiner had no qualms with addressing the folly of Trump's rallies, but was mysteriously silent on the protests and riots that have ravaged major cities across the country for the past three months, involving thousands of individuals.
Cabrera confirmed what Reiner had suggested, saying: "People will die because they attend this rally tonight." Reiner responded in the affirmative, adding that "the virus doesn't care whether you believe in it or not. The virus doesn't care what party you belong to."
Reporter Megan Messerly tweeted out: "Trump campaign spox Tim Murtaugh is defending the decision to host an indoor rally tonight. In a statement per pool, he says that if people can gamble in casinos or 'burn down small businesses in riots' they can "gather peacefully under the 1st Amendment" to hear from Trump."
Reiner appeared to justify the large gatherings of protesters and rioters when he responded to Messerly: "Apparently Trump’s campaign believes that since there were riots this summer it’s only fair that the president be allowed to kill some of his supporters by exposing them to superspreader events."
KTLA 5 reported that Trump said "we are not shutting the country again. A shutdown would destroy the lives and dreams of millions Americans," adding that "we will very easy defeat the China virus."
