A casual swim in a West Delray canal quickly escalated into twenty-one days of wandering through the bowels of the city. As the South Florida SunSentinal reported, a forty-three year old woman, whose name was not disclosed due to her mental health issues, was out for a swim on March 3rd when she opened a door that lead to the sewer.
Following one tunnel into another, then another, the woman soon became disoriented and could not find her way back to the surface. It was only thanks to a passerby that she was eventually rescued. The lady who saved the day was parking her vehicle and heard something coming out of the sewer grate. Upon further inspection she realized it was a person's voice and called the police. Emergency crews showed up on the scene and pulled the woman, who was not wearing any clothes, out of the sewer and up on to the street. She claimed to have been "following the light", which lead her to the drainage ditch from where she was rescued.
The woman was said to have had a history of not only mental health issues, but substance abuse as well, and a tendency to get herself into bad situations as a result.
