WATCH: Montreal Economic Institute scrutinizes efficacy of lockdown

"Did strict lockdowns save more lives than lighter ones?" The video asks.

The MEI used a study composed of 16 European countries that was then analyzed by Bloomberg News. Showing the rates of infection in comparison to the strength of the lockdown, the MEI extrapolated that there was no causal relationship.

"Some countries had fewer deaths, others had more," said the MEI. "The strictness of the lockdown doesn't seem to matter."

The MEI then asks what Canada could learn from this study of European countries, "if we get a second wave, how can we avoid the economic costs of a strict lockdown while protecting the most vulnerable."

"There is a middle ground," concluded the video.

Under the coronavirus lockdown, Canada's economy has taken on an eye-watering amount of debt in order to keep the economy in hibernation. This has been seen most clearly through government services like CERB and the rent relief program.

Despite the damage these programs and the forced shuttering of businesses have done to the economy, there is still conclusive evidence that Draconian lockdown policies—which even it's greatest advocates failed to adhere to—actually prevents the rate of infection.
