MTG backs Jim Jordan for House Speaker after GOP votes 113-99 for Steve Scalise in closed-door meeting
“I like Steve Scalise, and I like him so much that I want to see him defeat cancer more than sacrifice his health in the most difficult position in Congress.”
Following the GOP nomination of House Majority Leader Steve Scalise for House Speaker, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene revealed that she voted for House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan during the secret ballot vote that took place on Wednesday.
Greene said that despite Jordan not winning the nomination, she would be voting for him on the House floor during the upcoming vote to elect the House speaker.
"I like Steve Scalise, and I like him so much that I want to see him defeat cancer more than sacrifice his health in the most difficult position in Congress," Greene wrote. "I lost my father to cancer and it’s a very serious battle."
According to The Hill, Scalise was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in August, which he described as a "very treatable" form of blood cancer.
Scalise has been undergoing treatment, and said late last month that "the cancer has dropped dramatically."
Greene said that "We need a Speaker who is able to put their full efforts into defeating the communist democrats and save America. We must stop funding foreign wars - Ukraine. We must stop the weaponized government and hold them accountable. We must secure our border. We must protect our kids."
"And we need a full leadership team dedicated to this fight in these unprecedented times."
Other lawmakers expressed concerns for Scalise’s health, including Rep. Ralph Norman, who on Monday told reporters "I was honest with Scalise. I think his health is an issue. I don’t want somebody that is gonna deteriorate in the job. This is a tough job. You’ve got to be everywhere."
Rep. Tony Gonzales endorsed Scalise, stating that his wife, Jennifer, had supported Scalise’s decision to run.
"Jennifer is the one that has said, 'I wouldn’t allow him to do this if he wasn’t healthy enough to do this,'" Gonzales said. "When his wife says, ‘We’re in this to win this’ — that’s all I needed to know."
Scalise won the nomination in a 113-99 vote, and will head to the House floor to face off with Democrat nominee Hakeem Jeffries.
