New details surface around woman who fell from balcony in Toronto

On Tuesday, the Toronto Sun published a story that released new details about the interaction between 29-year-old Regis Korchinski-Paquet and police officers in the moments before she died. The sources were not specified however they said that Korchinski-Paquet had barricaded herself on her balcony with a large appliance blocking the door and "while trying unsuccessfully to vault to a neighbouring balcony" before falling to her death.

The SIU will go ahead with their investigation regardless however the family's lawyer Knia Singh said they will not speak with the unit following an announcement on Monday that the SIU had plans to speak with Korchinski-Paquet's mother and brother later on this week.

The leak of details has been very hard for the family and it comes at a time when the family is still grieving, said Singh. Whether or not the family will speak to SIU investigators in the future remains unknown.

Korchinksi-Paquet was in the midst of a mental health crisis around the time of her death, said her mother, Claudette Beals-Clayton. She had asked police to take her to the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health prior to her falling from the balcony but said she remains unsure of how the event unfolded.

“In the absence of information people are just putting out this type of narrative based on nothing, demonizing our police officers without any facts or evidence,” said Toronto Police Association President Mike McCormack, regarding the misinformation surrounding the incident. There was a story circulating that police officers threw her off of the balcony up until the latest details were leaked.

Until the SIU investigation is complete, police are prohibited from commenting on investigations.
