The Trudeau government is struggling to explain recently released documents today that reveal that our Prime Minister and his top advisors had no idea that they had invited former criminal and failed assassin to a dinner hosted by Canada’s high commissioner to India. CBC obtained the documents through an Access to Information request. The documents reveal that there was ignorance at the highest levels of the Trudeau government regarding the identity of Jaspal Atwal and confusion as to who had invited him to the dinner. According to CBC, officials were scrambling to do damage control and, “debunk what they referred to as the 'embarrassing narrative'" created by the inclusion of the Sikh separatist dinner guest during Trudeau’s recent visit to India. A photo of Jaspal Atwal with Sophie-Gregoire Trudeau is widely considered to be the most embarrassing reminder of what was an entirely disastrous trip for Trudeau. The details of the ATI documents include an email by former national security advisor Daniel Jean that reads, “It is not realistic to screen all guests on all reception lists and we had no info until this AM suggesting that a potential guest may be problematic." According to CBC’s initial reading of the ATI documents, “Jean offered up a theory: that rogue factions within the Indian government had arranged for Atwal's attendance in order to embarrass Trudeau and sabotage the trip.” Jean dismissed the outrage over Trudeau’s trip as a “false narrative” in late April and retired shortly after.
