New York City intends to fully reopen on July 1, with the aim of having much of its population vaccinated by that time, Mayor Bill De Blasio announced on MSNBC Thursday.
"We are ready for stores to open, for businesses to open, offices, theaters—full strength," said De Blasio
People across New York City have come out to get vaccinated in what De Blasio calls "extraordinary numbers." 6.3 million vaccinations have been given to the city's 8.4 million residents, and the city is working hard to get more shots into the arms of New Yorkers.

De Blasio said that the state was currently under a lot of the thresholds they had put in place to see whether the city was ready to reopen, but he urged that New Yorkers who hadn't received their vaccines yet go get theirs.
He also stated that even when opened to "full strength," people should take the proper precautions including wearing masks when indoors and frequency hand washing.
"We're giving COVID nowhere to run anymore in New York City. We've said a month or so ago it was the variants versus the vaccination, what was going to win, which one was going to win the race?" said de Blasio.
"Vaccination is winning this race, going away. 6.3 million vaccinations, COVID's plummeting. We now have the confidence we can pull all these pieces together and get life back, really in many ways to where is was before this where people can enjoy an amazing summer."
De Blasio did not make it clear how the state restrictions would affect New York City's plans for reopening.
New York Yankees and Mets games are currently letting fans in at 20 percent capacity, with fans having to either take a rapid test or prove their vaccinations status.
Cuomo announced Wednesday an end to the state's midnight curfew on bar and food service, on May 17 for outdoor dining and May 31 or indoor dining, as well as lifting the restriction on bar seating on May 3.
Broadway theaters have also reopened in a limited outdoor capacity, with many producers eyeing a June 1st reopening date, according to Reuters.
