No charges laid against Alberta man who killed home intruder

According to CTV News, police were called to a home in Red Deer County around 3:00 pm last Monday due to a break-and-enter in progress. Once police arrived, they found the suspect with a gunshot wound and the Alberta man injured.

"Witnesses reported that the homeowner had arrived home and found the deceased sleeping in the residence. A confrontation then occurred in which the deceased struck the homeowner numerous times with a baseball bat," police said in a release. "During the attack, the homeowner was able to retrieve a firearm and shot the deceased one time."

The Alberta man stated that the intruder tried to break into his home this past long weekend as he was on vacation with his wife. But his two children were there during two of the break-in attempts. Police were called to the scene on both occasions and told the intruder to stay away from the house.

On the Monday following the long weekend, however, the Alberta man returned home after a family outing to see that his residence looked broken into as the gates were open and the family's quad was moved. He grabbed his shotgun and went to investigate, while his family waited in their motorhome.

"I don't wish this on anybody. If I would have known that he was in the house I would never have gone in the house in a million years," he said. "I would have just waited out front and called police again."
