Ontario Liberal MP resigns over charges she hired her sister with public funds

Ratansi says she "made an error" in her Facebook post. "I made an error in judgment by employing my sister in my constituency office, and I have remedied the situation, but this does not excuse the error I made," she wrote.

Ratansi, who also represented the riding from 2004 to 2011, made history for being the first Muslim female elected to Parliament, according to the National Post. She is also the chair of the standing committee on environment and used to be the vice-chair of the committee overseeing federal government departments' expenses. She was first elected in 2004, and allegedly had her sister working for her for years. The position itself was constituency assistant.

Ratansi explicitly states she made an error in hiring her sister but a number of former staffers alleged she was well aware of the rules and even told everyone to refer to her sister by another name, while at work. She also ensured her sister was not in photographs.

"Yasmin told us explicitly — my sister will be coming to work in our office," said one former employee. The pseudonym used by the sister was "Jenny Khatri."

Ratansi has said that she would represent Don Valley East as an Independent.
