Peter MacKay in self-isolation after his family returns from Mexico

MacKay's family went on vacation one day before the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the coronavirus to be a pandemic and as thousands of Canadians had to cancel their vacation plans.

MacKay's family are following rules put in place by the Canadian government that all travellers returning from abroad must self-isolate for 14-days at the risk of fine or even imprisonment.

The Nova Scotian's family went to Mexico on March 10, which was before the government put travel restrictions in place. They returned on March 18. MacKay reportedly distanced himself from his family in order to prevent contagion, moving to a hotel before they returned.

He returned home to his family after the Conservative Party delayed the leadership race, which included some controversial feet shuffling from MacKay. A number of candidates, journalists and Conservative members applied significant pressure to the Party to delay the election.

The Conservative Party's leadership committee (LEOC) made a statement on March 27 regarding the election, saying the "LEOC will continue to monitor developments and meet regularly to discuss options, and scheduled May 1, 2020 to return to do a fulsome re-evaluation of the dates and time needed to complete the race under the obligations of the constitution."

"The safety and health of volunteers has been top of mind for LEOC and staff."
