Law enforcement in Vietnam have confiscated an estimated 345,000 used condoms that had been cleaned and resold as new, according to WRCBtv.
Video footage released by state-owned Vietnam Television (VTV) this week revealed dozens of large bags containing the used condoms sprawled across the floor of a warehouse in the southern province of Binh Duong.
The warehouse owner said they had accepted a "monthly input of used condoms from an unknown person," state newspaper Tuoi Tre reported.
The authorities said the bags weighed more than 794lbs—equivalent to 345,000 condoms, according to VTV.
A woman who was detained during the bust shared with the authorities that the used prophylactics were initially boiled in water before being dried and reshaped on a wooden phallus before being repackaged and resold as new.
VTV noted that it is not clear how many of the resold condoms had been distributed. The detained woman said she had received $0.17 for every kilogram of recycled condoms she produced.
