Ontario Premier Doug Ford is being called to apologize by his political opponents after saying that listening to NDP Leader Andrea Horwath was like listening to "nails on a chalkboard."
"Why don't you come and join us to support the people of Ontario for once, rather than just sit there and criticize and criticize. It's like listening to nails on chalkboard, listening to you," said Ford at Queen's Park on Wednesday.
NDP members jumped to call Ford a sexist for his comment, including Marit Stiles and Peggy Sattler.
"Men denigrating strong women by saying their voices sound like “nails on a chalkboard” is classic misogyny, sexism & gender stereotyping. What message does it send to ON women & girls when this is the language used by the Premier of ON?" tweeted Sattler after the incident.
Later, in a press conference, Horwath said: "It's really not about me personally. It's about the fight that I have and that I bring here to Queen's Park on behalf of everyday families, the criticism as well as the proposals... At the end of the day, when the premier doesn't like being questioned, doesn't like being criticized, he goes to the worst possible place. That's just who he is."
"I think he owes the people of Ontario an apology," she continued. "This kind of behaviour from a premier is wholly inappropriate and it's unfortunate he doesn't see it that way."
Ford's office has since issued a statement saying that the premier condemns all forms of misogyny and sexism.
