The RCMP in Nova Scotia say that people who claim to have coronavirus are threatening to cough on officers.
The Mounties have collected multiple reports of this type of threat over the past several days according to CTV News.
Cpl. Jennifer Clarke, a Nova Scotia RCMP spokesperson said, “A threat to transmit the COVID-19 virus is a threat to the wellbeing and health of our members which is a criminal offence.”
Clarke noted that it would be considered assault if someone did follow through with the threat.
Clarke added that the RCMP will be giving “the appropriate criminal charges” based on each incident though there have not been any charges laid yet.
This warning comes after two men in New Brunswick were charged with assault in a similar incident after they allegedly coughed on others.
The call was responded to by the Kennebecasis Regional Police Force on Thursday, in Rothesay, N.B. Someone had made a complaint about two people who had returned from the Dominican Republic and failed to self-isolate.
Police say the coughing started when a fellow resident complained that the two people were not self-isolating.
The two men have received assault charges.
In Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, people who have returned from travelling outside of the province are required to self-isolate for two weeks upon their return.
