The Canadian Border Services Agency is having a difficult time deporting a refugee who supported ISIS online. Othman Ayed Hamdan came to Canada under false pretenses, claiming he was a persecuted Christian. While here, Hamdan posted messages on Facebook identifying infrastructure “which could be targets for attack” and encouraging lone wolf attacks. Hamdan was also one of the individuals to praise the two deadly terrorist attacks on Canadian soil in 2014. Hamdan was acquitted of terrorism charges but was ordered to be deported by the Refugee Board, citing him to be a security threat. Officials have found it difficult to deport Hamdan as he has refused to file the paperwork required to renew his Jordinian passport, which is necessary for travel. “As a result of the malicious prosecution that I endured at the hands of the minister and RCMP and Crown representatives, and a criminal matter which I was acquitted of, I have developed a multitude of psychological disorders,” he said about his detention. Canadian authorities are asking Jordan if they can deport Hamdan with an expired passport and his identification cards.
