View on X"We have committed that 50 percent of the classes will be women or people of color," Kirby boasted. ""Today only 19 percent of our pilots at United Airlines are women or people of color... And by the way, from all the data I've seen, that's the highest of any airline in the country."
During the viral clip, Kirby laments that too many of the pilots at the company were white men. When he was pressed on why the c-suite was largely made up of white men, he deflected and talked about the company's further commitment to DEI.
In addition to Kirby's drag, the company has appointed Maya Tallman, a trans-identifying male, as the head of United's DEI Committee.
Airlines have faced increased scrutiny over the past several weeks over their DEI measures. This included one report that the Federal Aviation Administration has been pushing for the recruitment of people with "severe intellectual" and "psychiatric" disabilities.
In addition, a panel blew off the side of a plane on an Alaska Airlines trip mid-flight and the company had to ground many flights in response. The model had been a Boeing 737 Max 9 and the criticisms of the plane manufacturer with respect to DEI hiring took place in response.
