WATCH: Scheer calls out China on coronavirus response, numbers

"I think it's important for China to be open and transparent about not only the number of cases but its handling of the outbreak of this virus," said Scheer on Wednesday at a press conference. "I think it's essential that all countries report honestly and openly to the WHO so we can make decisions here based on the very best science and the best evidence."

When asked about how much legitimacy China's figures had, Scheer was blunt in describing his trust for the authoritarian regime. "I view anything from, a government that is autocratic, that is not democratically elected, that does not have robust and open transparency measures that controls the media in its own country—I view everything that those types of governments say with a great deal of suspicion and skepticism."

This comes in light of the revelation that China had not properly revealed the extent of their own coronavirus outbreak, according to Bloomberg. US intelligence revealed that the country under-reported the number of cases and fatalities from the virus.

This comes in direct contrast to the World Health Organization Assistant Director-General Bruce Aylward's claim that China's reported drop in deaths and reported cases "is real."

“Very rapidly, multiple sources of data pointed to the same thing: This is falling, and it’s falling because of the actions that are being taken,” said Aylward, who led the team.

WHO has been on the receiving end of heavy criticism as of late, thanks largely to what many see as pro-China PR and general inaction and transparency in slowing the spread of the virus to the west and throughout the world.
