SCOTUS justices meet for first time since draft decision overturning Roe v. Wade was leaked
The justices were originally expected to go over ongoing cases, but they will discuss the recent series of events, as well as what steps need to be taken to ensure whoever committed the deed is brought to justice.
On May 2, an initial draft opinion overturning Roe v. Wade was leaked, causing mass protests, with some even showing up to the homes of Supreme Court justices. In the days since, the justices have kept a low profile, however they are set to meet on Thursday for the first time since the controversy began.
The justices were originally expected to go over ongoing cases, but they will discuss the recent series of events, as well as what steps need to be taken to ensure whoever committed the deed is brought to justice.
The leaker has not yet been identified, however Chief Justice John Roberts has ordered an internal investigation, which many suggest will be lengthy given the sensitive and insulated nature of the court.
The leak shocked not only the court, but the country as well. Soon after it was revealed that Roe v. Wade would be overturned, protests erupted from coast to coast.
While most protestors remained peaceful and in typical gathering spots, some decided to take their frustrations to the justices themselves, showing up outside their homes.
Instead of condemning the protests outside justices' homes, many Democrats praised them. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), offered his support, as did White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki.
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) sided with the protestors as well, but it was not enough to save her from also being targeted. Pro-abortion demonstrators descended upon her house in San Francisco demanding that she use her position to "investigate the corrupt justices" and "save abortion."
