Two sisters stabbed a security guard 27 times with a concealed knife after having been asked to leave an establishment for not complying with COVID-19 face mask guidelines this past Sunday.
Jessica Hill and Jayla Hill, ages 21 and 18 respectively, are facing charges of attempted first degree murder. Their violent outburst left their victim, a 32-year old security guard at Snipes Shoe store in Chicago, Illinois, in critical condition with knife punctures to the face, neck, back, and arms.
Judge Mary C. Marubio, who presided over the charges, denied the sisters bail, citing the spontaneous nature of their aggression, according to the Chicago Tribune.
“It’s the complete randomness of this. It’s terrifying,” Judge Marubio said. “This is just too random and quickly escalating. I can’t fashion conditions that would protect the community.”
Neither sister had a preexisting criminal record or a history of violence.
Upon entering Snipes shoe store, both sisters were asked to put on masks and use hand sanitizer to comply with establishment guidelines. Both sisters refused—even after a security guard was called over to escort them outside the store, the Chicago Sun Times reported.
One of the sisters took out a phone to start recording the confrontation. Witnesses say she escalated the situation by threatening to call someone to come “kick his ass.”
The guard made a move towards the phone. At this point, one of the sisters used a nearby garbage can to strike the guard in the face. Footage from security cameras shows the younger sister then grabbing the guard by the hair as Jessica Hill took out a small knife and proceeded to stab the officer 27 times.
Eventually the sisters stopped their assault, mocking the guard for having been “f’ed up.”
The guard, although seriously injured, managed to keep the sisters in the store until additional police arrived; a Chicago Police facility building lies just behind the Snipes Shoes Store, less than a block away.
Rosalyn Frazier, a manager at a nearby clothing store, told the Sun Times that this isn’t the first time customers who refuse to comply with store rules have escalated confrontations.
“I’m kind of wary because we often have to tell customers to wear their masks, and they get irate and don’t want to do it,” she said. “We had a customer the other day that didn’t want to wear a mask and we needed to call the police. It’s crazy.”
The sisters will be heard again in court on November 4. They were ordered to be held without bail.
