An off-duty New York City police detective was stabbed 10 times on Oct 2 by two illegal immigrants from the Dominican Republic who continued attacking him after he identified himself as a police officer. The suspects have since been arrested. The cop spoke out about the stabbing earlier this week, saying that the suspects "didn't care" when he told them that he was a police officer.
Jose Mercedes, 33, a 10-year department veteran of the New York Police Department, was on vacation when he was attacked while cleaning out the trunk of his car. He said he identified himself to the men in both English and Spanish, but they ignored him
"I told them in English, I told them in Spanish that I was a police officer," Mercedes said at a news briefing on Tuesday. "They didn't care."

The pair stabbed Mercedes ten times and stole a gold necklace that was a gift from his mother. He chased after them, but they were able to get away on an e-bike. Mercedes had to undergo surgery in response to his injuries.
"I want to thank the 52 [precinct] NYPD officers that responded and just gave me my aid and helped me in this difficult time that I was going through where I, I almost died," he said. "And then the NYPD, [Emergency Services Unit]. They just demonstrated their calmness and their professionalism …in rendering aid to me and applying tourniquets to both of my arms and then inspecting my body for further injuries."
Mercedes, who is Dominican himself, was also asked about the possibility of people using the incident to advocate for more deportations.
"I dedicate my life to investigating crime, and I think that it's very important to keep our community safe for all of us," he replied.
According to a report by Fox News, Carabello was arrested in December 2024 but was released before ICE was able to lodge a detainer request.
