Halton Regional Police showed up at Old Abbey Lane Park and dispersed a crowd of approximately 100 people who were tobogganing there, apparently breaking lockdown rules.
The incident happened on the afternoon of Jan. 30, and Oakville by-law officers were also present at the scene.
According to this article by local outlet The Beaver, Const. Steve Elms reported the following regarding the events of the past Saturday:
"Upon arrival, we found approximately 65-70 vehicles parked on the road in addition to 20 vehicles parked in the school parking lot, and there were 100 people tobogganing on the hill."
"We took an educational approach to ask people to disperse, in alignment with the Rules for Areas in Stage 1 under the Reopening Ontario Act." Elms also added that the amount of people gathered on the hill was too high, according to the laws he has to enforce, and that officers felt that social distancing was not possible with that many people present.
No summonses or fines were issued during the course of clearing the hill, and everybody left in a peaceful manner.
A Facebook user posted a video of a respectful but confrontational interaction with police, in which he told officers that "you are making the kids cry over here, and it's unbelievable that you're telling us what to do."
"You guys are out here, outdoors, telling us what to do," continued the man holding the phone.
The officer responded, "If you'd like to see a crowd of people here, turn the camera that way. Perhaps people would then understand."
The camera pans right, where you can clearly see individual families together, but very much meters apart from other families.
